German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will visit Romania today. In Bucharest, he will be received by Prime Minister Marcel Çolaku, according to a government press release.

“Issues of bilateral policy, security and economic policy will be discussed”, the information to the media states, writes BTA.

After his meeting with Cholaku, the federal chancellor will participate in a round table with business representatives, and later he will participate in a conference dedicated to the meeting of the leaders of the Party of European Socialists. The event is expected to be attended by the European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmitt, who is the PES candidate for President of the European Commission, as well as the PES President Stefan Löwen.

The German Chancellor’s visit to Romania comes in the context of Europe’s preparations for the June elections. European Council President Charles Michel, Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre De Croix, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković were in Bucharest on Wednesday. They were received at Kotroceni Palace by President Klaus Iohannis to hold consultations on the Strategic Program of the European Union.

Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Călăcu and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose parties are part of the same European political family, had an informal meeting last November in Malaga, where the Congress of European Socialists was held.

“Romania has in the person of the Chancellor of Germany a friend and supporter of our country’s accession to the Schengen area. We are confident that together with Germany we can build a stronger, united and fair Europe,” wrote Marcel Cholaku on the X social network at the time.
