German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in China on Sunday, Chinese official media reported, beginning a tour during which he aims to strengthen economic relations with Berlin’s largest trading partner.
Schulz’s plane landed in the large city of Chongqing on Sunday morning, according to the official Chinese channel CCTV, accompanied by a large delegation of ministers and businessmen.
This three-day visit also comes at a time when criticism is increasing against Beijing against the backdrop of its close relationship with Moscow.
The discussions are expected to be difficult, while the European Union is engaged in a tug of war with China, accusing it of destabilizing the European market by flooding it with low-cost products.
On the diplomatic level, Ukraine will be the focus of the talks, at a time when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that his country might lose the war due to the inability to obtain enough ammunition.
A German government source in Berlin said, “Given the close relations between China and Russia, Beijing has the potential to exercise its influence over Russia.”
