German Climber Dies After 1,700-Meter Fall on Ama Dablam

German climber Wolfgang Waschiczek, 57, died after falling nearly 5,000 feet from Nepal’s Ama Dablam peak on October 26. The fatal accident occurred a day after he successfully reached the 6,812-meter summit, making it the first climbing fatality on the mountain this season.

Wolfgang Waschiczek Dies In Fall From Ama Dablam Summit

Wolfgang Waschiczek, 57, had successfully reached the 6,812-meter summit on October 25 alongside his personal trekking guide, Sonam Lama. The German mountaineer lost his life on October 26, following a fall from the upper ridges of Ama Dablam, a Himalayan peak in northeastern Nepal. The pair descended to Camp III that same evening to rest before continuing down the mountain.

Expedition organizers reported that the climber became separated from his guide under unusual circumstances the following morning. While preparing to leave Camp III at around 6,200 meters, the guide asked Waschiczek to wait with his safety equipment while returning borrowed sleeping gear to another tent.

When Lama returned within less than five minutes, Wolfgang was not at the spot where he had been asked to wait with his safety gear.

Search operations later revealed that Waschiczek was not wearing crampons when he vanished from the snowy slope. Rescue coordinators believe he suffered a fall, tumbling roughly 1,700 meters down the mountain face. Another Sherpa eventually spotted his remains at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters.

Helicopter Recovery And Postmortem Plans At Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital

Rescuers retrieved the remains during the afternoon following the discovery of the body, deploying a helicopter-assisted search team to the mountain. They transported the remains initially to Lukla, the mountain town that serves as the primary gateway for trekkers and climbers heading into the Everest region.

The body was subsequently flown to Kathmandu, where a postmortem examination is scheduled to take place at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. Gokul Thapa, head of the trekking company Real Himalaya, noted that diplomatic channels will facilitate the final repatriation.

Thapa added that Waschiczek was no stranger to the region, noting that he had come to Nepal in 2024 for a trek, and his passing saddened us.

Autumn Climbing Season Pressures On Ama Dablam

Over 300 climbers are attempting to scale Ama Dablam this season. Waschiczek’s death marks the first recorded fatality on Ama Dablam during the current September-through-November autumn climbing season. Situated in the Khumbu region near Mount Everest, the mountain is renowned for its steep faces and exposed ridges, attracting hundreds of international mountaineers every year.

Department of Tourism records indicate that over 300 foreign climbers applied for permits to scale the peak this season. With rope-fixing teams having opened the upper route earlier in October, a massive wave of climbers has concentrated on the slopes. Local estimates suggest that more than 200 individuals, combining foreign clients and local support staff, have successfully reached the summit so far this autumn.

Days prior to the accident, two Japanese climbers died on another peak in western Nepal following heavy snowfall and an apparent slab avalanche. Other peaks have also seen fatalities this year, including the death of American climber Shelley Johannesen—co-founder of outfitter Dash Adventures—who was struck by an avalanche at around 23,600 feet while descending from the summit of Mount Makalu, as well as the deaths of famed British-Nepali climber Nirmal Purja and nine others on Pakistan’s Broad Peak.
