Who takes the Lola home? Today the German Film Prize will be awarded. Academy boss Florian Gallenberger thinks: Before you moan about German film, you should consider one thing.

Berlin.

The winners of the German Film Prize will be announced in Berlin. The awards ceremony begins tonight.

Around 1700 guests are expected at the exhibition center, as announced by the German Film Academy. The guest list includes actors such as Ulrich Tukur, Nora Tschirner and Kida Khodr Ramadan. Katrin Bauerfeind will moderate the evening, the first will broadcast it with a time delay from 10:45 p.m.

With twelve and thus the most nominations, the black and white drama “Dear Thomas” is in the running. Director Andreas Kleinert tells the story of the life of author Thomas Brasch (1945-2001). Albrecht Schuch plays the leading role. Two other productions have also been suggested particularly often: Andreas Dresen’s drama “Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush” tells the story of the mother of former Guantánamo prisoner Murat Kurnaz; The drama “Great Freedom” by Sebastian Meise is about a homosexual man who has to go to prison in post-war Germany.

The tragic comedy “Wonderful” by Karoline Herfurth, the film “Contra” by Sönke Wortmann and the drama “Spencer” by Pablo Larraín were also nominated for best film. It stars US actress Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana.

New presidential duo

The evening will be important not only for the nominees, but also for the actress Alexandra Maria Lara (43) and the director Florian Gallenberger (50). The new presidential duo has only been in charge of the German Film Academy for a few weeks – making the German Film Prize their first major appearance.

“I believe that the standing of German films in Germany is much worse than abroad,” Gallenberger told the German Press Agency in advance. “When people look at German films from abroad, that’s characterized by respect and admiration. Within Germany, there’s always a certain reservation.”

“What you shouldn’t forget: If you talk about Danish films, for example, which are rightly valued, you see one or two Danish films a year. But they do a lot more. And then maybe the other films are like all of us don’t get it, not everyone is a masterpiece,” said Gallenberger. It’s much more about looking at the structures under which films are made and in which the films then find their way to the audience.

“How are the structures compared to the structures in France, for example?” His colleague Lara also said that so many wonderful films were being produced. “I don’t think we’re lacking in talent.”

The German Film Prize is considered the most important national award in the industry. The prizes are associated with a total of around three million euros for new projects. Last year, the tragic comedy “I’m your human” by director Maria Schrader won the Golden Lola for best feature film. (dpa)
