The world of Colombian football is in mourning after receiving the sad news of the death of Germán Gutiérrez de Piñeres, a prominent former footballer and three-time champion with Millonarios.
At 67 years old, Germán left an indelible mark on the sport and on the hearts of the fans of the capital team.
Germán Gutiérrez de Piñeres, who was born on March 7, 1957 in Bogotá, became an icon of Millonarios, winning the league titles in 1978, 1987 and 1988. His passion and dedication on the pitch made him one of the club’s key players during the 1980s, a bulwark in the defence of the ‘blue’ team.
According to reports from journalist César Augusto Londoño, Germán suffered a heart attack the night of the Colombia game. Although his brothers tried to rescue him, he was no longer showing signs of life when the ambulance arrived. His sudden departure leaves a deep void among his loved ones and the football community.

Affectionately known as ‘Cachacosteño’ because, although born in Bogotá, he spent much of his life in Barranquilla, Germán not only shined as a professional footballer, but also ventured into coaching after retiring from the field. During his career, he shared a dressing room with great figures of Colombian football, such as Carlos ‘Pibe’ Valderrama in 1984, and other outstanding players such as Wilman Conde, Miguel ‘Nano’ Prince, and Mario Vanemerak.
Germán was loved by the Millonarios fans, who admired him for his defensive solidity, his aerial skills and his ability to start attacks from defense. His legacy in the team is indelible and his departure leaves a deep pain in the hearts of those who saw him shine on the field.
Millonarios FC expressed its sorrow for the loss of this great idol through an emotional message on its social networks: “Millonarios FC deeply regrets the death of Germán Gutiérrez de Piñeres, champion with our team in 1978, 1987 and 1988.
