German Minister arrives in Tripoli, holds intensive talks with ministers and officials on migration

The Minister of Interior, Imad Trabelsi, discussed with the German Minister of State for Migration Affairs, Bernhard Koser, the security cooperation between the Libyan and German Ministries of Interior in combating illegal immigration.

The meeting was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Public Affairs, Mahmoud Saeed, the German Ambassador to Libya, the Libyan Ambassador to Germany, the Director of the Immigration Department and the Military Attaché.

According to the Ministry of Interior, the meeting discussed border management and benefiting from security expertise and training to raise efficiency.

The meeting also reviewed the efforts of the Ministry of Interior in combating the phenomenon of immigration in cooperation with international organizations, and the voluntary deportation of immigrants to their countries.

In the same context, the German Minister met with the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Lieutenant General Mohammed Al-Haddad, and discussed the issue of irregular migration and the Libyan efforts made to address this issue.

The German Minister and his accompanying delegation also held a face-to-face meeting with the Ministry of Interior, headed by Undersecretary Mahmoud Saeed, to discuss various areas, most notably the issue of irregular migration, border control, and benefiting from security experiences and training to raise competencies.

The practical measures taken by the Ministry of Interior in Libya in cooperation with international organizations were also discussed, as well as the facilities granted by the Government of National Unity regarding exemption from visa fees for irregular migrants voluntarily returning to their countries.

The meeting was attended by the Head of the Passports, Nationality and Foreigners Affairs Authority, the Directors of the Training Department, the Coast Guard Department and the Undersecretary’s Office, the Passport Investigations Department, the Assistant for Public Affairs at the Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency, the Assistant Director of the International Relations and Cooperation Department, and a representative of the Border Guard Agency.

The German Minister also discussed with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Taher Al-Baour, ways to enhance bilateral relations and focus on the issue of illegal immigration.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Al-Baour praised Germany’s support in resolving the Libyan crisis, and stressed its efforts in combating irregular migration, the importance of the Trans-Mediterranean Migration Forum (TMMF) held in Libya, and the efforts of the Libyan security services in particular.

Al-Baour called for international cooperation to solve the immigration problem, stressing that Libya is a transit country and cannot address this issue alone and the negative phenomena that accompany it, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The German side also confirmed its readiness to cooperate with Libya in this file, pointing to the difficulties facing the region in this regard, according to the Foreign Ministry.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the two parties agreed to form a joint committee to discuss this issue in depth, and to emphasize that this problem requires joint international solutions.
