Berlin police are investigating the theft of three types of Holocaust memorials in Berlin, the incident took place on July 9. A local resident found one of the stones in a cloth bag on the promenade in the theft area. The investigation revealed that a total of three stones had been excavated from the sidewalk in front of house number 7, of which only one has been found so far. Apparently these are memorial stones for the Ilgner family, who lived until 1936 in a house in the area.
The family fled the Nazis to the Netherlands, where they were captured, later transferred to the Sobibor extermination camp and eventually murdered. Local media reported that “the police have announced that they are taking this case seriously, and are continuing their investigation with the involvement of state security experts.” The stumbling blocks are a project of the artist Gunter Demnig, designed to commemorate people persecuted by the National Socialists between 1933 and 1945.
