A 64-year-old German woman died on Saturday afternoon after falling approximately 20 metres from a cliff in Sagres. Emergency teams, including maritime police and high-angle firefighters, recovered her body from the cliff area following an alert received by the Lisbon maritime rescue coordination centre.

The Cliff Fall Between Tonel and Beliche Beaches

The incident occurred on the afternoon of October 3, while the victim was walking along the coastal path situated between Tonel and Beliche beaches in Sagres, within the municipality of Vila do Bispo. According to details released by authorities, the woman fell roughly 20 metres into a hole located within the cliffside terrain.

The Lisbon Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre received the initial emergency notification at 5:24 p.m., alerting authorities that an individual had tumbled into a cavity along the rugged coastal formations.

Emergency Response and Recovery Operations in Sagres

Rescue operations mobilized multiple local and regional emergency units. Elements from the Lagos Maritime Police command, the SeaWatch project, and the Vila do Bispo Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the scene alongside a medical team from the National Institute of Medical Emergency.

Firefighters deployed a specialized high-angle rescue team to access the terrain. Rescuers hoisted the victim to the top of the cliff, where a physician attached to the emergency medical unit formally verified her death.

Investigation and Forensic Transfer by Authorities

Following authorization granted by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, firefighters transferred the deceased woman’s remains to the Algarve’s western forensic medicine department for examination. The Lagos Maritime Police command took charge of the occurrence to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
