Thousands stuck in the mud trap. The conditions at the Burning Man Festival in the USA: still dramatic. Even Germans are trapped in the huge mud puddle!

It is THE cult festival, to which around 70,000 fans made the pilgrimage to Nevada. They wanted to party in the desert. But heavy rain has turned the otherwise bone-dry ground into a muddy landscape. The location? Terrible!

Toilets can’t be emptied, cars can’t move around the site, and there’s hardly any cellphone signal. BILD reached the German Jana Schuessler on Monday night. She gives insights into the drama on site.

Music fan Jana Schuessler actually just wanted to party

“It suddenly started raining around noon and we got worried pretty quickly. The storm was pretty severe and just didn’t want to stop,” says the photographer. “The week before the festival even started, it rained heavily in the area and it took two days for the site to dry out again.”

But after their arrival it rained and rained again. “We couldn’t go anywhere!” Said the German. Escaping festival fans got stuck with their cars in the desert mud – and may be left with salvage costs of up to 10,000 US dollars.

Also, one person died in the rains.

Shoes were full of mud!

Jana Schuessler: “My feet and shoes were full of mud, which felt like cement within a very short time. Everyone who has had the chance has tied bags around their shoes at some point, which has helped the walk to some extent.”

Schuessler only received updates on the situation over the radio. “Where we were told we were not allowed to leave the premises…”

Luckily for the artist (who photographed superstar Avril Lavigne, among others): she had come in a spacious mobile home and shared food and drink with her festival neighbors.

Escape attempt failed

Then she too wanted to flee. The announcement that the gates were cordoned off by police officers turned out to be untrue. “Despite the ban, we tried to leave the site around 11 p.m. on Saturday. However, that went wrong and a friend got stuck in the mud with his vehicle on the first try.”

Schuessler and her companions just wanted to get away!

They finally made their second attempt on Sunday morning, although the radio continued to announce that the gates were locked. “We tried anyway – and even succeeded. With luck we somehow got out of mud hell but saw loads of RVs on our way stuck in the mud.”

Many are still waiting for rescue

When just an hour later friends of the Germans wanted to get out, their attempt failed. “Unfortunately, they are still stuck and will probably have to wait days for rescue because it has started raining again.”

And so the situation at the Chaos Festival remains dramatic. Because, according to Jana Schuessler: “Most RVs have a small limit until the toilet is full. You don’t want to imagine that. No wonder some have chosen to walk eight miles to a shuttle…”
