Who do Germans see as their next chancellor? According to a new poll, Friedrich Merz is not even in second place.

Since Tuesday, Friedrich Merz has officially been confirmed as the Union’s candidate for chancellor. However, as a Forsa survey has found, most Germans do not consider him to be the best next chancellor.

The result of the survey commissioned by RTL and n-tv is clear: When asked about the suitability of the possible candidates to be chancellor, Boris Pistorius (SPD) is clearly in the lead – 30 percent can imagine the defense minister in the office. Merz is only in third place. With 19 percent approval, he is just behind the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU), whom 22 percent of those surveyed can imagine as chancellor.

Friedrich Merz also does not have an advantage over Olaf Scholz (SPD). Only 41 percent of those surveyed think that Merz would outperform the SPD politician as chancellor – 48 percent of those surveyed do not see it that way.

But there is at least one positive result for the Union candidate: Although Merz will be 70 years old at the next election, 64 percent of those surveyed do not think that his age will have a negative impact on his candidacy.
