In the starry sky in good weather, astronomers say, up to six thousand stars can be seen with the naked eye. Somewhere among them, at one time, the Star of the Magi shone…

Before Christmas 2023 in Germany, according to the authors of a special study, almost 22 billion light bulbs will be lit in private houses and apartments alone, as well as on balconies, facades and adjacent plots of land. To be more precise – 21,800,000,000, which is almost two billion higher than last year’s figure and is a record. The number of garlands in German households increased by 22 million over the year.

These figures are contained in a report based on the results of a representative survey conducted for the thirteenth time by the marketing service YouGov, commissioned by LichtBlick, one of the suppliers of electricity from renewable sources in Germany.

80 percent of the lights on the Christmas garlands will be energy-saving LED light sources, about 20 percent will be incandescent lamps.

Christmas lights in Germany

According to expert estimates, in the weeks before Christmas and during the holidays, almost 622 million kilowatt-hours will be spent on these purposes in German households, which is eight million kilowatt-hours higher than last year.

This amount of electricity would be enough to supply 195 thousand households for a year, that is, an average-sized German city. The bill for this energy will be approximately 286 million euros. The volume of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere will reach 235 thousand tons.

What else did you find out during the survey? Only every seventh respondent, that is, about 14 percent, considers it unnecessary to decorate public spaces with garlands – streets, squares, boulevards, and so on. They would prefer to save these resources. 77 percent want cities and other communities to look festive, up 10 percent from the previous year. The rest didn’t care.

As for personal plans, only 16 percent of participants in this representative survey intended to save energy in 2023 by abandoning garlands, which is half the result of last year, when one in three reported such plans before the start of the Christmas season.
