Germany intends to support the Ukrainian book market and will intensify contacts between Ukrainian and German publishers as part of a special program to be funded by Germany until July 2024. The project will be coordinated by the Exchange Association of the German Book Trade, and the funding, as reported on Wednesday, July 26, by the German news agency dpa, will come from the state budget – in the amount of 900 thousand euros.

The program is aimed at supporting Ukrainian publishers, authors and journalists. At the same time, understanding of Ukrainian culture and history should be further strengthened in Germany. Exchange Association of German Booksellers (stock exchange association of the German book trade) headquartered in Frankfurt am Main is working on this project together with the Frankfurt Book Fair, the Ukrainian Book Institute, the Kyiv Museum Complex “Art Arsenal”a specialized online magazine about books and culture “Chitomo” and Goethe Institute in Ukraine.

“Russia, having unleashed an aggressive war against Ukraine, is also systematically waging a war against Ukrainian culture and identity,” said Claudia Roth, the federal government’s commissioner for culture and media. “The work of publishers in these conditions is hardly possible, access to books for the public is significantly difficult,” Roth said in a press statement.

Peter Kraus vom Cleff, head of the Exchange Association of German Booksellers, stressed that German publishers want to “help mitigate the devastating effects of the war on art and literature” in Ukraine. With the help of the planned projects, in his opinion, it is possible to make German literature in Ukraine and Ukrainian literature in Germany better known.

Oleksandra Koval, director of the Ukrainian Book Institute, noted that such support is very important and “strengthens the presence of Ukrainian culture in Europe.”
