Doha: After the Iran team, which turned the Qatar World Cup into a platform to protest against the religious orthodoxies, the German team with a separate protest. Ahead of their Group E match against Japan, the team posed for a group photo with their mouths covered. Germany’s protest was against FIFA’s move to ban World Cup teams from wearing the ‘One Love’ armband, which declares solidarity with sexual minorities.

The captains of seven European teams were ready to wear ‘One Love’ armbands in solidarity with sexual minorities. However, when it was confirmed that there would be action by FIFA, they withdrew. FIFA is preparing to take action because homosexuality is illegal in Qatar.

Earlier, Iran had boycotted the national anthem during the World Cup match against England as part of a declaration of solidarity with the anti-government protests in the country. At the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar, the Iranian team did not sing or show any emotion when the national anthem was played before the start of the match. Iran captain Alireza Jahanbakhsh was reported by the international media as part of the team’s joint decision.
