Germany and Denmark are building the longest underwater tunnel in the world

by time news

These days, the world’s largest underwater tunnel is being built in Europe, which will connect Denmark and Germany in just a 10-minute drive, and will be 40 meters below the surface of the Baltic Sea.

The construction of the tunnel, which will be 18 km long, began about two years ago, and is expected to open in 2029. The construction of a port on the Danish side has now been completed, which will advance the construction of the tunnel significantly with the help of massive concrete works.

“The expectation is that the first production line will be ready around the end of this year, or the beginning of next year,” said the CEO of the Danish company responsible for the project, “We are preparing for the start of the tunnel’s first phase by the beginning of 2024.”

The tunnel is one of the largest infrastructure projects in Europe, and its budget is more than 7 billion euros. The tunnel will replace the current ferry services between the village of Bluland in Denmark and Pottgarden (Germany), which transport millions of people every year, and instead of 45 minutes the journey will be shortened to 7 minutes by train and 10 minutes by car. The tunnel will be built in the Fehmarn belt, which is the name of the strait between the German island of Fehmarn and the Danish island.

In addition, as far as the tunnel that combines road and railway is concerned, the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link project in its official name will be the longest in the world.
