Germany and Norway begin production of new submarine

DISPATCH — To respond to maritime security challenges, particularly on NATO’s northern flank, Germany and Norway today inaugurated the start of production of the new 212CD submarines. They will be manufactured by the German industrialist ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

“Maritime security is gaining importance in the world and in particular in Europe,” declared the boss of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS), Oliver Burkhard, obviously referring to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in which the West is is investing more and more.

According to him, the program for these type 212CD submarines represents “an important first milestone in establishing NATO’s most modern standards in the field.”

In July 2021, Oslo and Berlin spent some 5.5 billion euros for six models in total (four for the Norwegian navy and two for the German navy). As reported by AFP, Norway must receive its copies from 2029, Germany its in 2032 and 2034.

As the German Defense Minister recalled, cooperation between the two countries concerns maintenance, crew training and armament. “We developed the submarine together, we are building it together and we will operate it together,” he said. And added: “We remain open to integrating other partners into the project.”
