BERLIN – A law allowing adults to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis for personal use and to keep up to 50 grams at home came into effect in Germany today. The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and its surroundings were filled with hundreds of thousands of people who came to express their joy at the implementation of the law. ‘Smoke In’ celebrations were also organized as part of the celebrations in the country.

With the implementation of the law, adults in the country can possess up to 25 grams of cannabis and grow up to three cannabis plants at home. Public use is permitted as long as it is not in the sight of children or near sports facilities. Special cannabis clubs will be allowed to grow and buy cannabis on a limited basis from July 1. Clubs can have up to 500 members. Cannabis will continue to be banned for minors. The German police union had taken a stand against the implementation of the law. Germany is not the first European country to relax its cannabis regulations. Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Belgium and the Netherlands already allow small amounts of cannabis.
