The German regulator announced it would examine Apple devices if the investigation in France progresses far enough. Other countries such as Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands are already monitoring the situation.

The German regulator said this Thursday (09/14/2023) that it will examine concerns about radiation from Apple’s iPhone 12 if the investigation opened in France advances sufficiently, adding that the procedure launched in that country could guide all of Europe.

“The Federal Network Agency is in close contact with the responsible authority in France,” the Bundesnetzagentur (Federal Network Agency or BNetzA) declared to the Reuters agency.

French regulators on Tuesday (09/12/2023) ordered Apple to stop selling its iPhone 12 phone model, alleging that it emits levels of electromagnetic radiation that are above European Union exposure standards.

The French government watchdog issued the order after the iPhone 12 recently failed one of two types of tests for electromagnetic waves capable of being absorbed by the body.

The Apple company, for its part, refuted that the device, which went on sale at the end of 2020, complies with the regulations.

In addition to Germany, Belgium also announced on Thursday that it will review the possible health risks of Apple’s iPhone 12. Meanwhile, Italy and the Netherlands announced that they would monitor the situation, although they did not specify measures.

Last Tuesday, the National Frequency Agency asked Apple to implement “all available means to quickly resolve this malfunction” of the phones already in use and said it would supervise device updates.

If they don’t work, “Apple will have to recall” the phones that have already been sold, the French agency said.

As reported Associated Press 141 mobile phones were tested and the French regulator found that when the iPhone 12 is held in your hand or carried in your pocket, its electromagnetic energy absorption level is 5.74 watts per kilogram, higher than the standard of the European Union of 4 watts per kilogram.

Over the past two decades, numerous studies have been conducted to evaluate the health risks of mobile phones. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), no adverse health effects have been observed.
