The young Swedish environmental activist was arrested on Tuesday in Germany, during a demonstration against a project to expand a coal mine, police said.

“The group (of demonstrators, Ed) is in custody,” said a police spokeswoman, adding that the anti-coal activists had headed “to the edge of the mine”. Photos also showed the activist being evacuated by the police.

About 60 to 70 activists sat near the edge of the mine opening, according to the German weekly Der Spiegel, prompting a police intervention.

Located in the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia (west), the Garzweiler mine is a huge open-pit site, operated by the company RWE. The construction of the mine has already caused the evacuation of several villages and other localities must disappear to allow its extension.

According to Der Spiegel, the demonstrators gathered near the village of Lutzeräth, which is one of these municipalities.
