A shooting incident was recorded today (Monday) in the German city of Heidelberg, when an armed man opened fire in a lecture hall of the Neuhammer Peled University in the south of the city. Police said a number of people were injured by gunfire in the incident, and that the shooter was killed on the spot.

The police statement did not provide further details about the circumstances of the incident, nor did it provide an exact number of injured or information on the severity of their injuries. “This is what is known so far: a lone assailant wounded several people in a lecture hall with a long bite. The assailant himself died,” the official Twitter tweet said. It was later said that large forces of police and emergency services had arrived at the scene, and residents of the area were called to keep their distance from the university until further notice.

According to a report in the German newspaper Bild, the shooter entered the university lecture hall and opened fire at the students on the spot. The German news agency DPA reported that at one point he turned his weapon on himself, and apparently committed suicide while shooting himself to death.
