Düsseldorf Adam Tooze is not afraid to express himself as “politically incorrect”. He is even less afraid to take on the political establishment. This is especially true for the federal government.

The British economic historian has neither understanding for the gigantic subsidies for the US semiconductor manufacturer Intel nor for the meticulous interpretation of the debt brake. This is a “threat to the prosperity and functioning of the state,” says the researcher, who teaches in New York and maintains good contacts in Berlin’s political establishment. The 56-year-old is very skeptical about the “self-defeating anti-China” policy of the USA, which is also the “linchpin of American politics” under President Joe Biden.
