The Federal Republic is the lame man of Europe. It is crumbling in too many places at the same time: infrastructure, education, immigration of skilled workers. Where is the signal to leave?

WIf Germany were a student, the transfer would be at risk at the moment. The pandemic and the first year of the energy crisis were mastered tolerably. But now the worsening structural problems are pushing back onto the agenda: staff shortages and poor education, the climate transformation of industry, a backlog of reforms and implementation deficits in the authorities. All of this leads to persistent weakness in growth, which makes Germany the lame man of Europe.

Up close, this overall picture is not yet clearly grasped by many. Therefore, looking from a greater distance helps. With the OECD, the EU Commission and the International Monetary Fund, three international organizations have given the Federal Republic bad marks in the past few days. In short: Germany is lagging behind in terms of economic growth, is too hesitant to invest, is unattractive for companies and is not reducing its greenhouse gas emissions fast enough. It is therefore about more than an excessively high electricity price or a temporary economic downturn. More and more you get the feeling that it is crumbling in too many places without anyone trying to counteract it with mortar and concrete.
