The German government has officially paved the way for the country’s 2040 Olympic bid.
Interior and Sports Minister Nancy Feser signed a basic agreement in Paris during the Olympics there with the German Olympic Sports Confederation as well as the federal states and cities interested in bidding to host.
Berlin, Leipzig, Munich, Hamburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region want to host, but a joint effort with two candidates is likely. The German Olympic confederation was lured by a bid for the 2036 Games, 100 years after those in Berlin, but a bid for the 2040s now looks more likely.
“We want another home game for our athletes. The government stands united behind the new German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. We want to use the great opportunities that the Olympic Games offer for our cohesion, for our economy and for sport,” Feser said.
The president of the Olympic confederation of Germany, Thomas Weikert, says that 2040 would be a “good option” since it is 50 years since the country’s reunification, BTA reported.
Feser emphasized that this would be a “strong symbol” behind the application.
