(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 19 – Born in Italy, at the court of Caterina de’ Medici, in the second half of the sixteenth century, ice cream has become one of the symbols of Italy. Yet Italy is not the main producer of ice cream in Europe, nor is it an exporter. According to Eurostat data for 2023, total production fell in the 27 EU countries by 1.4%, from 3.3 to 3.2 billion liters. And the main producer of ice cream, for the second consecutive year, was Germany: 612 million liters, followed by France with 568 million liters and Italy with 527. The decreasing trend that emerges from the overall data has not spared our country where production stood at 571 million liters in 2022. Looking at exports, French glace beats everyone: the sticks, cones and cups that are exporting the most from Europe are in fact those from beyond the Alps. In 2023, a fifth of extra-EU ice cream exports came from France with 52 million kilos. Followed by the Netherlands (35 million kilos), Germany (29 million kilos) and then, in fourth place, Italy, which in 2023 exported 28 million kilos of ice cream outside the EU, 11 percent of the total of member countries.
