Germany: New Chancellor for Urgent Acceleration of Vaccinations

by time news

New restrictions have not yet been envisaged, Olaf Scholz said after a meeting with the heads of state governments. He spoke in favor of a decision on universal compulsory vaccination.

German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has held the first meeting with the heads of state governments since his confirmation as head of the cabinet on measures to combat the spread of coronavirus. The joint efforts of the federal and regional authorities in Germany will be aimed at significantly accelerating vaccination, he said on Thursday, December 9.

According to Scholz, given the emergence of a new mutation of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the omicron variant, it is necessary that at least 30 million people receive the first, second or booster vaccine by the end of the year.

A meeting of the new pandemic crisis headquarters, together with the heads of state governments, is scheduled for next week, Scholz said. The head of the German government also stressed that scientific expertise is needed before drawing conclusions about the effectiveness of the restrictive measures already taken and the need for further restrictions. The pandemic expert council will also meet next week.

On December 10, a vote is scheduled in the Bundestag on a bill on compulsory vaccination against coronavirus in medical institutions and nursing homes. Compulsory vaccination in them must be introduced as soon as possible, said the Prime Minister of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia Hendrik Wüst (Hendrik Wüst). He also called for expediting the necessary consultations on universal compulsory vaccination. Against the background of the fourth wave of the pandemic in Germany, prompt action is needed, in particular to protect the elderly, Wüst stressed. Olaf Scholz also spoke in favor of a decision on universal compulsory vaccination.

Earlier, on December 2, the heads of the federal and state governments of Germany approved restrictions for unvaccinated residents throughout the country. In particular, it was decided to admit only those vaccinated and ill with covid in stores (with the exception of those that sell everyday goods). Among other things, the mandatory wearing of protective masks in schools has been introduced, the rule on the closure of clubs and discos in areas where the seven-day infection rate exceeds 350 per 100 thousand of the population, restrictions on the number of participants in private parties and public events and a ban on New Year’s fireworks.
