Germany: Protests against pandemic measures in Leipzig

by time news

Police broke up protests against covid restrictions in Leipzig, as the actions did not comply with the rules for mass events during the pandemic.

In Leipzig, several thousand critics of government measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic on Saturday, November 6, staged a procession in the city center. As the press secretary of Saxony said on the evening of this day, several scattered processions, the number of participants in which exceeded one hundred people, were dispersed by the police. According to the current regulations, in the city it is allowed to organize only rallies, not processions, with the participation of no more than a thousand people.

Police officers from seven other federal states of the Federal Republic of Germany were involved in ensuring order at the actions that took place, despite the ban, according to a press release from the Saxon police published following the protests. “At the same time, consistent work was carried out to prevent unauthorized processions from being held. For this, partly direct coercion was used, ”the document says.

In addition to the protest rallies, critics of the coronavirus restrictions held several other actions, including a rally called Freedom Drivers, which was attended by 28 cars. In turn, the organization “Civil Movement Leipzig” organized a rally under the slogan “Freedom Day! Mandatory vaccination? Thank you, no! ”, In which, according to the police, 300 to 400 people took part.

On the same day, several counter-demonstrations of supporters of government measures to combat the spread of coronavirus infection took place in Leipzig.

At the end of the day, the police launched more than 30 investigations into articles of property damage, bodily harm, disturbance of public order and resistance to a police officer during execution. At least one law enforcement officer was hospitalized with injuries.

Meanwhile, on November 7, in another federal state of Germany, Bavaria, new restrictions come into force aimed at combating the pandemic. Now, entrance to restaurants and attending public events in enclosed spaces is possible only for vaccinated people who have had covid disease and who have a negative PCR test. Presenting an express test is no longer enough for this.

In addition, visitors are required to wear an FFP2 mask. In regions where the increase in coronavirus infections and the number of patients in intensive care units are particularly high, even stricter measures are in force.
