Scholz acknowledged that these are difficult times in international politics and that some of the things we used to rely on are no longer what they should be, specifically pointing to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The German chancellor reminded that Latvia and Germany have been close partners in the EU and NATO for 20 years, and in addition, Germany contributes to the support of NATO’s eastern flank, namely with its soldiers in Lithuania and airspace control in Estonia and now also in Latvia.

“I am aware that this cooperation has a message about solidarity and our NATO principles, that is, we stand up for each other and are ready to defend every centimeter of NATO territory with joint forces. This is my message to the Baltic countries as well – we are together shoulder to shoulder ,” emphasized Scholz.

Returning to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Scholz acknowledged that the West “must do more and enough to support Ukraine.” Germany provides support in large amounts – in total, they are almost 28 billion euros in arms deliveries and other forms of support. Scholz is also pleased with the recent decisions to support Ukraine more broadly, for example in the initiative of Czech ammunition supplies.
