Thomas Mertens, the head of the STIKO permanent vaccination committee, would not currently give your seven-year-old child a Covid-19 vaccine, Tagesschau reports. The expert said the reason was the lack of data at the current moment.
In addition to the data provided during the vaccine trial, there is “no data” on how children aged five to eleven tolerate vaccination, Martens explained in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung podcast. Recent publications show that long-term effects or health damage from vaccinations are unlikely.
Pediatricians are ready to start vaccinating children under 12, but are awaiting a recommendation from the Standing Commission on Vaccinations (STIKO). For pediatricians, the recommendation is an assurance that the vaccine for children is safe and well tolerated.
Mertens denied claims that STIKO is postponing the recommendation, or delaying the process of issuing it. He explained that experts are currently working on the document, which will be published around December 11th. “It will most likely be ready before a vaccine for children is available in Germany.”
Recall that in the case of vaccination against coronavirus for children and adolescents over 12 years old, STIKO first made a recommendation only for children at risk and in contact with especially vulnerable persons. Only after the necessary data were obtained and studied did the experts find it possible to make a recommendation for the vaccination of all children over 12 years of age.
