/ Bus, tram and subway services were halted across much of Germany on Friday, at the height of a week of intermittent public transport strikes over working hours.

The strikes, organised by the Verdi union, covered 14 of the country’s 16 states, including Berlin.

The strikes are due to end in the capital at 2pm (1300 GMT) but will continue until Saturday in other areas.

Unrest in the country could grow as Friday’s strike coincides with climate change protests in more than 100 cities demanding greener transport, organised by Fridays for Future and other environmental campaign groups.

This is the second wave of nationwide public transport strikes in the past few weeks, organised by the Verdi union, which represents around 90,000 employees from more than 130 local companies.

Verdi said its current talks on public transport workers’ contracts had stalled as it pushed for shorter working hours and more vacation days.
