Germany: The combination of vaccines from Astrazeneca and Biontech is highly effective

by time news

The coronavirus vaccination campaign in Germany has gained momentum and is in full swing. The first dose has already been received by more than a third of the country’s population. The Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) recommends both vaccinations with a medication from the same manufacturer. However, for those who received their first vaccine with the AstraZeneca vaccine, an exception is made: for residents of the country under the age of 60, STIKO recommends using the mRNA vaccine for the second vaccination. A new study from Spain shows that the combination of AstraZeneca and Biontech mRNA increases efficiency severalfold.

The research data also showed that the combination of AstraZeneca and Biontech vaccinations is not only effective but also safe. The level of antibodies in those who received AstraZeneca Biontech was 30-40 times higher than in people in the control group who received one vaccination with Astrazeneca.

The effectiveness, as scientists believe, based on the available preliminary data, is increased precisely due to the combination of the two vaccines. After the introduction of Biontech, the level of antibodies in the participants in the study increased more than sevenfold. Whereas after the second dose of Astrazeneca, an increase in antibodies was noted only twofold.

The Combivacs study was conducted by the Carlos III Institute of Public Health. The study involved 679 volunteers aged 18 to 59 who received their first Astrazeneca vaccine. 450 of them were injected with Biontech during the second vaccination. 1.7 percent of study participants reported side effects after the second dose of the vaccine. People complained of headache, muscle pain and malaise.
