German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the country’s authorities intend to continue to exercise control at the borders of Germany in order to prevent illegal migration. He expressed his point of view in an interview with the Saarbrücker Zeitung newspaper, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS.

“We have long been implementing controls at the borders with Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland. During the European Football Championship, checks were carried out along the entire German border. Now we will continue to implement controls at the border with France during the Olympic Games. In general, we intend to continue to strictly monitor the German borders,” said Scholz.

At the same time, the Chancellor emphasized that the German authorities want to limit illegal migration. “The numbers must be reduced. Labor migration is necessary and therefore desirable. But too many people come to us illegally and say that they are seeking protection from persecution, but cannot explain the reasons for granting asylum, and then they are refused. That is why we began by strengthening border controls,” Scholz summarized.

Last Friday, temporary controls in place during the European Football Championship ended at all internal borders of Germany, including airports. Controls will continue at land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland. The aim is to limit illegal migration and combat smuggling. They will end on December 15 at the border with Switzerland, and on November 11 at the border with the Czech Republic, Poland and Austria. From July 20 to September 30, the German authorities introduced temporary controls at the border with France in connection with the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris.
