On Sunday, September 10, Germany will host another Open Monument Day (Tag des offenen Denkmals). This year, the German action, which is part of the European Heritage Days program, is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

According to the message of the organizers, over 5,500 objects and different places across the country can be visited within the framework of this Open Monument Day this coming weekend. All of them are marked on a special interactive map with a search function by the name of settlements, postal code or the name of attractions – www.tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de. Developed the same mobile app for iOS and Android.

Open Monuments Day has been held in Germany under the auspices of the German Monument Protection Fund (Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz) since 1993 and gives everyone the opportunity to see interesting objects under protection.

However, in many cases we are talking about sights that are usually closed to the public, or about specially prepared thematic excursions and other special events. The action itself is considered the largest cultural event of the year in Germany in terms of coverage and number of visitors.

Münster and the Peace of Westphalia

The grand opening of the action will take place in the city of Münster in North Rhine – Westphalia. This year marks the 375th anniversary of the Peace of Westphalia, two treaties to end the Thirty Years’ War in Europe, signed in Münster and neighboring Osnabrück in May and October 1648.

Places for negotiations between representatives of the conflicting parties – Catholics and Protestants – were the local town halls. In Münster alone, around 100 guided tours take place on the second weekend of September as part of the Open Monument Day. In 2022, the local Old Town Hall became the venue for the meeting of the G7 foreign ministers.
