The Federal Office for Information Security of Germany –BSIfor its acronym in German – has warned users about the risks of currently using antivirus software from the manufacturer of Russian origin Kasperskywhich he describes as “a particular risk to IT infrastructure». Likewise, it recommends substituting the company’s solutions for those of another security company to avoid the risk of possible ‘hacking’.

“The actions of the military and/or intelligence forces in Russia and the threats made by Russia against the EU, NATO and the Federal Republic of Germany in the course of the current armed conflict are associated with a considerable risk of a successful cyber attack. » said the BSI.

«A Russian IT manufacturer can carry out offensive operations by itselfbeing forced to attack target systems against their will, being spied on without their knowledge as a victim of a cyber operation, or being misused as a tool for attacks against their own clients”, he stressed, making direct reference to the problems that could derive from the use of solutions from the Russian company at a time like the present.

“We have no ties to the Russian government”

According to its own figures, Kaspersky currently has some 400 million users globally. Asked by ABC about its position regarding the warning from the German institution, the company affirms that it revolves around “political reasons.” It also highlights that the BSI statement “is not based on the technical evaluation of our products”, so there is no technical evidence that users are at risk.

“We are a private global cybersecurity company and, as such, we have no link with the russian government nor with any other government”, remarks Kaspersky about his relationship with the Kremlin. Regarding the invasion of Ukraine, it is pointed out that the war that Ukraine is suffering “is not good for anyone” and that, from within, it is believed that “peaceful dialogue is the only possible instrument to resolve conflicts.” Be that as it may, this is not the first time that Kaspersky has been in the spotlight for his status as a Russian firm.

In 2017, former US President Donald Trump accused the company of having relationships with Kremlin spies. The leader came to enact a law that prohibited the use of the company’s solutions to all federal agencies in the country.
