The German government has denied a media report that Germany no longer issues arms export permits to Israel.
“There is no moratorium on the export of arms to Israel and there will not be one,” a spokesman for the Ministry of Economy said in Berlin after DPA asked.
The ministry’s spokesman explained: “The federal government decides to issue arms export licenses on a case-by-case and situation-by-case basis after careful consideration, taking into account foreign and security policy considerations in accordance with legal and political requirements .”
In this way, the German government takes into account compliance with international humanitarian law, he further explained.
“The current situation, including attacks on Israel by Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as the progress of the operation in Gaza, is always taken into account when considering each individual case,” the spokesman said.
In a podcast published on September 11, German Foreign Minister Analena Berbock said that following the attacks on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7, Germany had done everything possible to support Israel’s self-defense.
However, under no circumstances could Germany support something that violates international humanitarian law.
