Germany’s foreign minister against the death penalty law for terrorists

by time news

Foreign Minister Eli Cohen held a meeting today (Tuesday) with German Foreign Minister Analana Barbuk. This is Cohen’s first political visit to the country, as part of his position.

The Ministerial Committee on Legislative Matters approved the death penalty law for terrorists

After the conversation, Barbuk addressed the controversy surrounding the reform of the justice system promoted by the government: “I spoke with Foreign Minister Eli Cohen about the reforms in the Israeli justice system, we are concerned about Israel’s intention to apply the death penalty to terrorists. Until now, only Eichmann was given the death penalty, it is a mistake to change that “.

As a reminder, the Ministerial Committee on Legislative Matters approved this week the death penalty law for “Otzma Yehudit” terrorists. According to the law, the court will be able to impose the death penalty on those who have committed the crime of murder on nationalistic grounds against the citizens of Israel. The committee decided that after a preliminary vote on the law, a discussion will be held in the political-security cabinet that will discuss the wording of the law.

Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gabir responded: “On this difficult day when two Israeli citizens were murdered in a Palestinian terrorist attack, there is nothing more symbolic than the passing of a death penalty law for terrorists.” This is a moral, fair law that also exists in the largest democracy in the world, and certainly in a country where a wave of terrorism plagues the country’s citizens.’
