Gerson leaves OM and returns to Brazil, to Flamengo

Less prominent with Igor Tudor, the Brazilian midfielder needed a change of scenery. With this transfer, he finds the Flamengo club he left when he came to OM.

Brazilian midfielder Gerson will leave Olympique de Marseille and join Brazilian club Flamengo, from where he arrived in the summer of 2021, the two clubs announced on Twitter on Tuesday.

This decision is not a surprise, the president of OM Pablo Longoria having indicated in November that he entered into negotiations with the carioca club for the transfer of the player, who no longer entered into the plans of Igor Tudor, the Marseille coach.

“Boa sorte” (“good luck” in Portuguese) tweeted OM on its official account to the attention of Gerson, explaining that “the Brazilian midfielder is transferred to Flamengo”.

The Brazilian club confirmed the player’s arrival with a tweet: “The first hired for 2023, we already know him and he is not from today. @GersonSantos08 BACK to MENGÃO (the nickname of the club, Editor’s note)”.

Gerson, 25, signed in June 2021 with OM, for five years, after being ardently requested by former Olympian coach, Argentinian Jorge Sampaoli. His transfer from Flamengo had cost at least 20 million euros.

But the relations of the Brazilian, not selected for the World Cup in Qatar, with Igor Tudor, the new Marseille coach, have never been good and the player has gone from holder to substitute.
