Sun on your plate would do wonders!

Dermatologist dr. Susan Stuart explains in an article from the Huffington Post that certain fruits and vegetables with a lot of carotene make your skin color warmer and therefore look browner. A British study from 2011, in which the skin color of students who ate a lot of foods containing carotene actually became browner, confirms this.

Now we hear you thinking how that works. Here’s the thing: carotene is the name used for yellow to reddish organic dyes. The substances are only made in plants. They ensure that your skin responds better to the aggression of the sun by maintaining the elasticity and hydration of your skin. This makes your skin healthier – and your skin color browner. Also nice: the fabric also ensures that your nails become stronger and your hair shines more. A real win-win!

According to dr. Jetske Ultee it is important to get enough antioxidants. These are full of vitamins A, C and E and therefore provide the same result as carotene. In addition, antioxidants ensure that the sun causes less damage to your skin and they stimulate the production of pigment.

Now the question arises of how much carotene and antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetables you should eat before the brown glow is visible. Sad news, because that is still unclear. Stuart advises you to do it in moderation, as with everything else. After all, too much is not good either.

If you do get an excess of it, in the worst case you can contract the skin disease carotenoderma. With this disease, parts of your skin, including the soles of your feet (yes, really!), can turn yellow. Yikes!

The foods that can help you achieve a tan include:

Wheat germ Nuts, such as hazelnuts and almonds Blueberries Carrots (also good for your eyes) Peppers Tomatoes Pumpkin Sweet potato Spinach Green cabbage

Please note, because these foods obviously do not protect you against sunburn. It is therefore very useful to provide your skin with a layer of sunscreen. That way you can be sure that you are in the right place!
