‘Get that vaccination done, and a little for yourself’ | Columns & Opinion

Under control

“It barely lives in the living rooms of young, fit people. Corona has become the flu, the pandemic seems to be under control. We might even pull out a test if we have a runny nose; ‘At least that’s how things come up’. And if two lines do appear, no one is panic anymore: everyone has already had it at least once or has been vaccinated. Hospitalization is unlikely.

Not self-evident

It is also for people who are in good health and have had their shots. But there is still a very large group of people in this country for whom health is not so self-evident. They are old or have underlying ailments. For them, an infection is not something they just do on the side.

Sick stays sick

Participating in the upcoming vaccination round no longer feels so necessary. Nevertheless, it is useful, argues internist and professor Marcel Levi – who is also chairman of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Last Sunday he said in Buitenhof that you are now trying not to make the elderly sick, to slow down the transmission of the virus (even if that is only a little) and to ensure that society can remain open. Because let’s not forget that; ill remains ill and that still resonates in all industries.

Blood irritating

The more we reduce the chance that we will get the virus or get sick from it, the greater the chance that we can continue to work. And thus we avoid the misery of classes being sent home, long waiting lists in care or even more chaos in public transport. We already find it very irritating that our favorite restaurant is open one day a week because of a shortage of staff. That can get really bad when the only staff there is sick in bed.

Living together, that’s what this is about. Do something for someone else, do something for each other. And that is difficult in an era in which we are mainly busy with our own development and our own individual. Add to that an incessant stream of disinformation and the chance that someone will miss the entire round of vaccinations is unnecessarily high.

poignant stories

In recent weeks we have been able to read countless harrowing stories on social media from people who have been felled by long covid. People who have not been able to carry out their work for two years, children who can no longer go to school. Corona may now be seen by many people as the flu, for one in eight Dutch people it was not. They suffered long-term complaints.

Wappies

Another corona wave can again be disruptive to our society and nobody wants that. We all want to get through the fall and winter months as normally as possible. We no longer have to rely on hardcore wappies. They are still waiting for the mass deaths of all vaccinated people and a Great Reset. We can count on the common sense of everyone who has realized that vaccination works and is very safe. Let’s take our responsibility and get that shot for each other – and somewhere in the distance also for ourselves.”
