The possibilities for obtaining data are almost endless, especially on relevant social media platforms. Now the security experts at KnowBe4 are warning of a new trend. His name: “Get to know me”.

Beware of “Get to know me”!

We all know those funny surveys on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and Co. in which we are supposed to reveal private details and share them with other users.

In the “Get to know me” trend, users share any facts about themselves in their story or as a post. Here, for example, they talk about their job, reveal their age, marital status or their favorite bars and hobbies.

But be careful: Such social media surveys have long been the favorite tool of social engineering fraudsters. Warnings about such online surveys are increasing. What’s behind it?

► Security specialist Dr. Martin J. Krämer warns: “Questions about favorite foods, pets or preferred drinks can not only be used for identity theft, but can also serve as answers to security questions.”

An example: “I like Lego, nature and traveling, I’m more of an introvert, I live in Berlin, I’m 24 years old, I work in a bakery and I like pizza.”

Things become particularly dangerous when the “survey” tries to install a new app or asks to access various utilities. Then there is a high risk that data such as passwords or telephone numbers will be read from the cell phone in the background.

Was ist Social Engineering?

According to the Federal Office for Security and Information Technology, social engineering exploits human characteristics such as helpfulness, trust, fear or respect for authority in order to skillfully manipulate people. In this way, cyber criminals trick the victim into disclosing confidential information, circumventing security functions, making transfers or installing malware on the private device or a computer in the company network.
