Baghdad / Obelisk Al-Hadath: The phenomenon of senior employees getting rich from public money is a common phenomenon in many countries, especially Iraq, as these people use their government positions to achieve personal profits at the expense of public money and the interests of society in general.

This is done through a variety of ways of misappropriating public money, some of them control government deals and control the distribution of contracts in non-transparent ways, and some of them use their influence to conduct deals in a way that achieves personal profits, and some of them use public funds to finance their election campaigns or to improve the conditions of their friends and acquaintances .

For example, the former head of the Sunni Endowment Office, Saad Kambesh, took advantage of his position and embezzled 45 billion dinars, before the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court issued a judgment in the presence of severe imprisonment for a period of four years.

And the fact that the great corrupt in Iraq escapes punishment in the blink of an eye despite the billion thefts, Saad Kambesh was able to escape from the detention center in the Karrada Maryam area near the Green Zone in central Baghdad.

Questions arise about the source of the wealth of senior corrupt politicians, such as a governor accused of major corruption cases and wasting 23 billion dinars, in addition to the former deputy and advisor Haitham al-Jubouri, who is accused of stealing billions from the secretariats of the Tax Authority.

The writer and political analyst, Muhammad Hassan Al-Saadi, asks if the file of Nour Zuhair (the first accused of stealing the century) is being repeated with Asaad Kambesh, and whether the government measures are sufficient in prosecuting the senior corrupt.

Issam Hussein, who is interested in Iraqi affairs, believes that there are thousands of files on the abuse of office and the disbursement of funds outside the powers, and these lawsuits may overthrow many of the corrupt who abused power.

Lawyer Muhammad Alaa pointed out that most of the employees have become wealthy, and the evidence is that dozens of officials are being brought in by the Integrity Commission on charges of bribery, embezzlement, theft, waste of public money, and abuse of office.

The writer, Mowaffaq Al-Khattab, believes that in the past, most employees and senior officials did not dare to embezzle a single penny, but today billions of dollars are being looted from the top of the pyramid of power to its base.

However, this phenomenon leads to widespread corruption, infringement of citizens’ rights, and spoiling the country’s image in front of the international community.

In order to reduce this phenomenon, the systems of control and accountability of public money must be improved and the penalties imposed on those responsible for its embezzlement must be tightened, in addition to educating society about the importance of accountability and integrity in public life.
