GGD warns of legionella contamination through energy-efficient measures

by time news

The GGD warns against legionella infections. According to the health service, the risk of infection is greater when people set the temperature of the heating or hot water boiler too low.

Legionella is a bacterium that occurs in various water systems. Under the right conditions, such as temperatures between 25 and 40 degrees, the bacteria can multiply to high concentrations. You can contract an infection by, for example, inhaling small water droplets with the legionella germs while taking a shower.

Not everyone gets sick after inhaling the legionella bacteria. The elderly, people with poor health or immune system and smokers are especially susceptible. An infection can cause flu-like symptoms or severe pneumonia. In exceptional cases, people can die from it. The GGD advises to store water with a temperature above sixty degrees.
