Ghulam Nabi Azad resigned from the crucial position

New Delhi: Senior leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has resigned shortly after being appointed to a key position in the Congress party. Ghulam Nabi Azad, who has been at loggerheads with the party’s national leadership for a long time, resigned soon after being appointed as the chairman of the party’s campaign committee in Jammu and Kashmir. Azad also resigned from the Jammu and Kashmir Political Affairs Committee.

Sources close to Azad suggest that Azad, who is a member of the Congress’s All India Political Affairs Committee, is being appointed to the Jammu and Kashmir Political Affairs Committee as a demotion. The removal of Azad’s close friend Ghulam Ahmed Mir from the post of party president is also cited as a reason for the split. Vicar Rasul Vanni was appointed instead of Mir.

Ghulamnabi Azad is one of the 23 leaders who wrote to Congress president Sonia Gandhi demanding a change in leadership. As soon as the electoral roll preparation and constituency re-allocation is completed, Azad resigned from the crucial posts when the assembly elections were to be held in Kashmir.
