(ANSA) – ROME, 23 AUGUST – In an increasingly complex and challenging world “it is essential to think about including volunteering in our country’s welfare policies”.
This is the appeal launched at the event ‘Right to health and charity’ at the Rimini Meeting, by the president of the National Confederation of Misericordie d’Italia, Domenico Giani, who asks for “greater recognition of the crucial role played by volunteers in the Italian social-health context”.
“In an era in which the National Health Service struggles to guarantee universal access to health, especially for the weakest segments of the population, volunteering – states Giani in a note – is a fundamental pillar. Our confraternities, present throughout the country, offer an irreplaceable contribution, filling the gaps in the public system and promoting the values of solidarity and care for others”.
Founded in 1244, the Confederazione delle Misericordie has a widespread network of over 850 offices, more than one hundred thousand volunteers and 250 listening desks called ‘Casa del Noi’.
“An army of good that, day after day, is committed to building a more just and supportive society”, reiterates Giani, recalling the contribution given during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Giani then underlined the importance of “a new Humanism that places the dignity of each person at the center and promotes a more equal and inclusive society”. Finally, “a thought for the Ukrainian population and for Bethlehem, places where the Movement with its volunteers has spent and is spending to build a world of peace”. (ANSA).
