High jumper Gianmarco Tamberi apologized to his wife Chiara and said to himself: “Maybe it’s a good sign to return home with more gold”

The flag bearer of the Italian Olympic team, Gianmarco Tamberi, lost his wedding ring in the Seine during the opening ceremony of the Paris Games. The 32-year-old high jumper was one of the athletes who celebrated the wildest on the Italian delegation boat. However, amid the hustle and bustle and heavy rain, her wedding ring slipped off her finger and fell off the boat into the water, Italian news agency ANSA reported.

The 2021 Olympic champion has almost zero chance of finding the ring in the Seine. Tamberi had to listen to some jokes from his teammates, but he also found consolation. One of the Italian water polo players consoled him: “If you’ve lost a gold, you’ll get another one.”

Tamberi later apologized to his wife, Chiara Bontempi. “I’m sorry, my love, I’m sorry. Too much water, too many pounds lost in the last few months or maybe too much enthusiasm about what we were doing. It was probably all three of them.” But he also knew how to make something good out of the loss: “It might be a good idea to return home with more gold.”
