“Overwhelmed by an unusual fate…” is Lina Wertmüller’s greatest success. A film that makes fun of the economic boom and its ignorance
“Overwhelmed by an unusual destiny in the blue sea of August” was the greatest success of Lina Wertmüller (after the “Gian Burrasca” tv) and of the couple she invented, desired and supported with Mariangela Melato and Giancarlo Giannini. Two young theater actors who in 1972, again thanks to the intuition of the director who was assistant to Fellini and Garinei and Giovannini, made their debut and immediately made a boom in «Mimì metallurgico» (after Travolti, on the same channel, at 11.10pm). An evening in honor of Wertmüller who fought to the last with the recalcitrant producers for her favorites – she Cassadra on stage with Ronconi, he Romeo with Zeffirelli – sensing that it was time to rejuvenate the comedy with two different characters.
“Overwhelmed”, released in ’74, a year full of films, grossing over one billion and 600 million, is a sunny yacht comedy off the coast of Sardinia that is suddenly shipwrecked with a dinghy on a desert island where the sciura with the r limp, «republican» mistress of the broken down boat, has a violent verbal, abusive, ideological confrontation with her rough «trinariciuto» communist Sicilian sailor. Love dream? Will the center left be born? Melato at the top, formidable snobbish Milanese lady, taking as an example the genius of Valeri (and Francesco Rosi also said his wife), with a wilder and bearded Giannini than ever who takes all his revenge, even going so far as to seduce the mistress and as the class clash screams.
But it is precisely this being an over the top paradox, a grotesque Slave Island, that pleases, in a film that makes fun of the economic boom and its ignorance. The epithet with which Giannini addresses his lady, «industrial bottana», is famous, while the scars of the real beatings that the two actors were forced to give each other on the rocks remained for a long time. The remake with Madonna and Giannini jr was useless.
