Giannis Antetokounmpo Agrees to $186 Million Contract Extension with Milwaukee Bucks

Milwaukee Bucks’ superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $186 million, according to his agent Alex Saratsis who spoke with ESPN on Monday. The deal will keep Antetokounmpo with the Bucks for the foreseeable future, including a player option for the 2027-2028 season.

Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA Most Valuable Player, has solidified his commitment to the franchise by signing this extension. It ensures that he will be playing alongside guard Damian Lillard until the end of Lillard’s contract, and also eliminates any possibility of Antetokounmpo entering free agency in 2025.

The Greek-born player took to social media to announce the extension, expressing his gratitude towards the organization that drafted him in 2013 as the 15th overall pick. Antetokounmpo’s development under the Bucks’ wing has propelled him to become one of the most dominant forces in NBA history.

To negotiate this significant deal, Bucks general manager Jon Horst traveled to Chicago to meet with Antetokounmpo’s agent and work out the details. The agreement aims to maximize Antetokounmpo’s earnings throughout his career. The signing had to take place before the 11:59 p.m. ET deadline on Monday.

The CBA’s Over-38 rule allows Antetokounmpo to sign another short-term deal with the Bucks in 2026 and a four-year extension in 2028. This provision gives both parties flexibility for long-term planning.

Antetokounmpo’s remarkable achievements on the court make him one of the greatest players in league history. With accolades such as the 2021 NBA championship and Finals MVP award, as well as two league MVP titles, his impact on the game is undeniable. Last season, he averaged a career-high 31.1 points. According to ESPN Stats & Information research, Antetokounmpo joins the exclusive club of players who have won an MVP, a Finals MVP, and a Defensive Player of the Year award. The only other players to achieve this feat are Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon.

The Bucks will begin their season by hosting the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday. With the contract extension in place, Antetokounmpo aims to continue leading his team to further success and cement his legacy in the NBA.
