The NBA landscape is bracing for potential upheaval as two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo appears open to a new team, with the Minnesota Timberwolves emerging as a prominent contender to acquire the superstar forward. League sources confirmed to ESPN’s Shams Charania on Wednesday that Antetokounmpo is “ready for a new home,” and the Milwaukee Bucks are demonstrating increased willingness to consider trade offers.
The possibility of Antetokounmpo leaving Milwaukee has sent shockwaves through the league, prompting numerous teams to explore potential deals. While Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly is known as one of the NBA’s most aggressive executives, assembling a package that satisfies the Bucks presents a critically important challenge. Minnesota currently lacks any tradable first-round draft picks, meaning any offer would need to be heavily centered around player value.
With Anthony Edwards considered untouchable, a potential starting point for the Timberwolves could include Jaden McDaniels, Naz reid, and Donte DiVincenzo. However, one analyst noted that even this collection of talented players lacks the All-Star caliber the Bucks are likely seeking. Brian Windhorst of ESPN anticipates Milwaukee prioritizing draft capital in any potential deal.
“They have to prioritize the draft,” Windhorst stated. “This year’s draft and their pick situation going forward. Their future is going to be tied to (the) draft.”
Warriors, Heat, and Thunder Also Express Interest
Several other teams have reportedly entered the fray, each with varying degrees of assets and willingness to negotiate. The Golden State Warriors have contacted the Bucks to express their “firm” interest and signal their readiness to make a ample offer, according to Anthony Slater of ESPN. While not actively seeking to trade Jimmy Butler, the Warriors would reportedly include him in a deal to facilitate salary matching. Milwaukee also has expressed some interest in Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga, and hometown hero Brandin Podziemski could also be part of discussions.
The Miami Heat are also formulating a potential offer, which, according to Ira Winderman of The South Florida Sun Sentinel, would likely consist of Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, Terry Rozier’s expiring contract, and Miami’s two tradable first-round picks.
Conversely, the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs appear unlikely to pursue Antetokounmpo.ESPN’s Tim macmahon reported that the Rockets will not be making a bid, stating,”I have been told that the Rockets will not be bidders… I’ve been told that repeatedly and I’ll say that they’ve got a pretty good track record of shooting me straight.” Similarly, sources within the spurs organization have indicated that Antetokounmpo doesn’t align with their current timeline centered around Victor Wembanyama. “Everything in San Antonio is about the (Victor Wembanyama) timeline, and this is a decade past the Wemby timeline when you bring in Giannis at his age,” MacMahon added.
Thunder Weigh Championship Window
The Oklahoma City Thunder possess the assets to make a competitive offer, but Rylan Stiles of SI.com suggests they should refrain from doing so. Stiles argues that acquiring a veteran star like Antetokounmpo could perhaps shorten the Thunder’s window of championship contention, disrupting their carefully constructed developmental trajectory.
As the February 5 trade deadline approaches, the future of Giannis Antetokounmpo remains uncertain. The coming days will undoubtedly be filled with further speculation and negotiation as teams vie for the opportunity to land one of the NBA’s most dominant players.
