Arizona Geological Survey employee Joseph Cook said that giant faults have begun to appear more and more often in Arizona, California, Texas and Utah, the total length of which is already at least 272 kilometers, reports sciencealert.com.

The main reason for the appearance of faults in the earth is the use of groundwater, which results in ground subsidence.

Groundwater provides almost half of humanity’s drinking water and about 40 percent of its irrigation.
