Giants’ Logan Webb finishes 2nd in NL Cy Young voting

San Francisco Giants pitcher Logan Webb narrowly missed out on the 2023 NL Cy Young Award, finishing in second place in the voting, MLB announced on Wednesday. Webb’s impressive showing earned him a spot in the top three, making him the first Giants pitcher to achieve this since Tim Lincecum won the award in 2009.

The award ultimately went to San Diego Padres left-hander Blake Snell, who received 28 first-place votes. Webb, on the other hand, received one first-place vote and 17 second-place votes. Despite falling just short of taking home the top honor, Webb’s stellar performance was acknowledged and celebrated by many.

“He’s going to win the Cy Young,” Webb said of Snell after pitching the second complete game of his career for the Giants in September. “He’s the best pitcher in baseball.”

Throughout the 2023 season, Webb proved himself as a dominant force on the mound, posting a 3.25 ERA across 33 starts, which ranked fourth among all qualified pitchers in the NL. He also tallied a league-high 15 quality starts. Even though he did not secure the top spot, NBC Sports Bay Area’s Angelina Martin highlighted three reasons why Webb made a strong case for himself and why being a finalist is a cause for celebration.

In addition to Webb and Snell, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen finished third in the NL Cy Young voting. Meanwhile, in the AL, New York Yankees’ Gerrit Cole won the Cy Young Award by a unanimous decision.

Despite the outcome, Webb’s impressive showing has solidified his reputation as an elite pitcher in the MLB and has left fans and analysts eager to see what he will achieve in the upcoming seasons.
