Giants Sign Bob Melvin to Three-Year Contract as Manager
San Francisco, CA – The San Francisco Giants have made a major move in their managerial front, signing Bob Melvin to a three-year contract through the 2026 MLB season. The announcement was made by president of baseball operations, Farhan Zaidi, during an introductory press conference held on Wednesday at Oracle Park. Moments later, Giants chairman Greg Johnson announced that Zaidi has also agreed in principle on a contract extension through 2026.
This decision ties Zaidi and Melvin together for the next three seasons, giving them ample time to work together and make a lasting impact on the team. Zaidi had one year remaining on his contract, and this extension solidifies his commitment to the Giants.
Melvin, who previously managed the San Diego Padres, had one year left on his contract with the team. However, Giants chairman Greg Johnson mentioned that there was no compensation being exchanged between the two NL West rivals. Zaidi expressed his gratitude towards the Padres for being flexible and accommodating throughout the process.
In an interview, Melvin explained that he had conversations with San Diego general manager AJ Preller about the opportunity to pursue another managerial job. He expressed that this was the only opportunity he would have considered and applauded Preller for his openness and support.
With this move, Melvin becomes the Giants’ fifth manager, following stints with the Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, Oakland Athletics, and the San Diego Padres. He brings with him an impressive regular-season record of 1,517-1,425 and three Manager of the Year awards.
The Giants fired Gabe Kapler with three games remaining in the 2023 MLB season, igniting their search for a new manager. However, it was clear from the beginning that Melvin was the team’s top choice. After a swift interview process, Melvin was granted permission to interview by the Padres on Sunday and was swiftly introduced as the 39th manager in Giants franchise history.
