Spain and the United Kingdom are navigating a complex web of geopolitical tensions, security concerns, and criminal activity surrounding Gibraltar Airport, an aviation hub situated on a contested isthmus. Recent disruptions caused by drone sightings have highlighted existing disagreements over sovereignty and fueled concerns about illicit trafficking.
A History of Contention
The airport’s location is at the heart of a long-standing dispute. A 1.6-kilometer sandy tombolo connects the Rock of Gibraltar to the Iberian Peninsula. While the Treaty of Utrecht granted Great Britain the Rock of Gibraltar, Spain maintains that the treaty did not relinquish its claim to the isthmus itself, viewing its occupation as illegal. This lack of recognition impacts air travel, forcing planes destined for Gibraltar to detour around Spanish airspace. Tho, the Spain-United Kingdom Agreement after Brexit aims to establish dual border controls – Gibraltar and Schengen – at the port and airport, with Spain conducting full Schengen checks on behalf of the European union.
RAF Disrupted by Drone Activity
On Saturday, July 6, 2025, an aircraft from the Royal Air Force (RAF) was diverted to Portugal due to drone activity near Gibraltar airport. According to reports from the Gibraltar Chronicle, drone sightings have been increasing in the area between Gibraltar and La Línea de la Concepción, causing multiple flight delays earlier this year.
“We are working with the government of Fabian Picardo and with the Royal Gibraltar Police to investigate the illegal drone operators and ensure that its use in Gibraltar is safe and legal,” stated a spokesperson for the armed forces of the United Kingdom in Gibraltar.the RAF emphasized its commitment to passenger safety, adding that flight details will be amended if any risk is identified. The government of Gibraltar has also declared its intention to address this interference with air operations, noting that operating a drone without permission from the director of Civil Aviation is considered a crime under local legislation.
Cross-Border Investigation
The investigation into the drone activity is a collaborative effort. The Civil Guard of Algeciras, through its specialized drone unit known as Pegasus (Police Specialist in Aeronautical Management and Operational Safety), is also investigating the flights.

The Shadow of Smuggling
Authorities suspect a link between the drone activity and tobacco smuggling. The Gibraltar Chronicle reports that smugglers are believed to be utilizing drones to transport tax-free tobacco from Gibraltar into Spain, circumventing customary methods of crossing the border with hidden cigarette packs. This presents a significant opportunity for smuggling networks, allowing them to avoid detection and evade taxes.
The use of drones to disrupt air traffic is not unique to Gibraltar. Similar incidents have been reported in Germany, Belgium, Denmark, and even Fuerteventura, with some governments suspecting foreign interference, including accusations against Russia utilizing drones launched from ships. The increasing sophistication of drone technology presents a growing challenge to airport security worldwide.
The situation at Gibraltar Airport underscores the complex interplay of political disputes, security threats, and criminal activity. As investigations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of air travel and addressing the underlying issues that contribute to these disruptions.
